Brazil fan found dead hours after watching WC match in Kushtia

A 20-year-old man was found dead, hanging inside his room, on Monday morning in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia, just hours after staying up late to watch a FIFA World Cup match, police and family members said.

The deceased, Ratan, son of Hossain Mistri from Paschim Gotria village under Koya union, worked as a mason's assistant. According to his family, he was a supporter of Brazil.

Police and relatives said Ratan watched Sunday's late-night World Cup match in which Norway defeated Brazil 2-1 before going to sleep at dawn. When he did not wake up in the morning, family members looked through a window and found him hanging from a scarf tied around his neck inside the room.

They broke open the door and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police later visited the scene and prepared an inquest report.

Ratan's father, Hossain Mistri, said his son was upset after Brazil's defeat but added that he could not identify any specific reason for the apparent suicide.

Family members said Ratan had married about a year ago. His wife, who has been staying at her parents' house nearby since the birth of their daughter, was not with him at the time of the incident.

Officer-in-Charge of Kumarkhali Police Station Jamal Uddin said it could not be concluded that Ratan took his own life because of Brazil's defeat. He noted that while anyone may support a football team, there was no evidence confirming the match result as the cause of death.

The OC said the victim's family and local residents requested that the body be released without an autopsy. As no objections were raised regarding the death, police handed over the body to the family after completing the necessary legal procedures.
